Console gamers rejoice. Microsoft just unveiled its next-gen Xbox Series X console, and Sony already announced the PS5. That means they can get their hands to these newest consoles by 2020. This can be hailed the year of the 8K games console.
Microsoft has teased its new console at the E3 games conference six months ago, in June 2019. That time, it was still called “Project Scarlett,” but it is now officially called the Xbox Series X. Since then, the excitement is palpable. To think the release date is actually not after a year from now just yet. When exactly is the release date of Xbox Series X, anyway? What got the fans so hyped? What are the specifications of Xbox Series X? What are its features?
Are these too early to share? Of course not. Remember how it was just the start of 2019, and now we are gearing for 2020! Days can pass just like that, and one day, the Xbox Series X console will be in the hands of the fans.
For now, this is everything you should know about the Xbox Series X.
Xbox Series X Release Date
First off, it is crucial to know when the Xbox Series X will be released. This gives you a gauge of how long you could still save and how much you should keep away each month to get this once it’s out in the market.
Reportedly, the Series X will be out in late 2020, or Holidays 2020. The exact date is yet unknown, but you could at least now know how much you should start saving up when the new year starts rolling. Rumors have it that Sony’s counter-offering of PS5 will be released around the same time, which means you have enough time to know which one you should get. The two can be expected to be battling it out for the ultimate supremacy in the 8k gaming consoles, and making the right choice is essential.
What makes the Xbox Series X so highly-anticipated is because it supports 8k gaming with frame rates of up to 120fps. It also supports the technology called ray tracing so that there is a sense of realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows. No doubt, all these enhance the gaming experience! Current information about the console also reveals that it will have the so-called variable refresh rates, which can aid the smoothness of gaming and ensure efficient motion handling.
Even though the full specs are still not available, or probably under wraps just yet, given the release date, Microsoft already offered certain hints of what to expect from the Xbox Series X.
At the very least, excited fans can expect the Series X to be more powerful than the already well-loved Xbox One X. According to Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, Series X is at least four times more powerful than the previous offering. That means, in essence, lucky people who will get the Xbox Series X can experience deeper immersion, broader exploration, and increased detail gaming. Reduced loading time is also one highly-anticipated feature.
Spencer told GameSpot that the changes from the Xbox One base console would be nothing short of dramatic, as the company really intended. He explained that this incoming console could have over eight times the CPU capacity of the Xbox One and twice that Xbox One X has.
The Xbox One has an eight-core 1.75GHz CPU, while the One X has an eight-core 2.3GHz CPU. With the Series X, a reasonable expectation is that it will feature an eight-core 3.6GHz Custom AMD Zen 2 chip. Just with this, gamers are already expected to see a vast improvement in every aspect of their gaming experience.
This is why the company is calling it as its ‘most powerful and fastest gaming console ever’.
Furthermore, if successfully managed, load times might eventually be eliminated with this newest series X console.
While nothing has been officially laid out yet, fans can also expect this new offering will have solid-state drives that are so much more powerful – 40 times the performance of present SSDs at least.
All of these specifications emphasized speed and storage space, which means Microsoft really knows its target. These specs can keep up with the desired experiences of gamers – fast and have beautiful visuals.
The console will also not overheat. With so many powerful features, a console will often naturally heat up. But the Series X is quite unique. Microsoft is preventing the console from melting into gooey plastic when it heats up by placing a tower casing that has a far larger volume. This casing is going to allow airflow through a single fan, as well as some extra heatsinks. The company claims that gamers can still enjoy one well-loved feature of the Xbox One with this Series X – the quietness of using the game.
Xbox Controllers and Other Accessories
The Xbox Series X Wireless Controller will have a new controller. It will not be anything close to revolutionary, though. Instead, it will only evolve from the past controller. It will have a slightly smaller form factor and a tactile new hybrid d-pad. The controller will also have enhanced latency. The controller is going to be more portable and easy to use.
Not only that, but Microsoft also saw the virtue of what its competitors Sony and Nintendo have done with their controllers. The Xbox Series X will have a dedicated share button, which is designed for users to take screenshots and even clips at a more convenient method.
The controller, despite some of the changes in its appearance, will still be compatible with Xbox One and vice versa. The controller can also be used on Windows PCs.
Xbox Series X Storage
It is unknown yet how much storage exactly the Series X will have. But naturally, it is expected that it will not go down below 1 TB for its base model. One TB is what the current Xbox One X has in terms of storage.
In relation to the question of storage is the question of versions. The versions of the consoles will naturally affect the storage. According to rumors, not just one but a total of three Series X consoles may be released by late 2020. Included in these rumors is the possibility of a version without an optical drive. This will look a lot like the Xbox One All-Digital Edition. The rumors are not that farfetched, especially if one considers how Microsoft and Sony are teaming up to improve their technologies.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is also already testing it’s Project xCloud streaming platform. According to Spencer, he believes that cloud gaming can complement traditional discs and downloads nicely. Discs at present, at least, are here to stay.
Is Xbox Series X coming with 4k Blu-Rays is another question that people are keen to find out today. It is not yet clear if the console will play 4k Blu-rays. There are great possibilities that 4k Streaming access can happen with Netflix and Amazon Prime Video with the Xbox Series X, but for others, they would not. What is clear is that the Series X will come with an internal optical drive with a slot on the front meant for the disc.
Xbox Series X Games
To add to the fans’ excitement, here are some exclusive games that the new series will have.
At the series reveal back in June, the company showed off an exclusive game for this console, “Senua’s Sagaa: Hellblade 2.” This is the sequel to the Hellblade-Senua Office.
The most-anticipated title, “Halo: Infinite,” will be released through Series X, but it will be compatible with all other new consoles. Other titles to watch out for are Forza and Minecraft. They might be announced when the release date of Series X becomes near.
Some fans are hoping to see CD Projekt Read’s Cyberpunk 2077 to be part of the titles that Series X will have. The game also features Keanu Reeves, adding to its appeal.
The titles mentioned here are likely to make up the full list. The full list can be expected to be unveiled near the console’s launch date.
Is Xbox Series X backwards-compatible? Can older accessories and games be used with this new console?
These are important questions for many, especially for those who are looking to upgrade their consoles but are not necessarily willing to just let their old console accessories and games go. It has already been discussed that the past controllers can be applicable to Series X.
What more, Xbox Series can still accommodate the titles that gamers enjoyed with their Xbox One, Xbox 360, and even the very first Xbox!
Will Xbox Series X Have Dolby Atmos?
The Xbox X Series supporting audio formats like Dolby Atmos is unclear. Both Xbox S and X have this support, though. Hopefully, such support will also be continued with the Xbox Series X.
Price of the Xbox Series X
It is naturally expected that the new console will not come cheap, given its features. But apart from being logically more expensive, there is still no prices of consoles given.
Accurately speculating about the price can be done by using the price of the currently available consoles. Given the Xbox One X was launched with a price of $500 and currently costs around 363, Series X might be priced more or less the same.
The Xbox Series X is quite promising, given its possible specs and possible price points. What can potentially affect its launch negatively, however, as well as subsequent profits, is the launch of the Sony PS5. Recently, there were alleged leaks on PS5 price and release date. But Sony quickly debunked the rumors.
