Gen.G extends Ruler’s contract by three years

South Korean esports organization Gen.G announced that its League of Legends AD carry Park “Ruler” Jae-hyuk had agreed to a three-year extension to his contract. Ruler joined the organization in May of 2018, alongside Kim “Life” Jeong-min and Lee “CuVee” Seong-jin. Song “Fly” Yong-jun joined just two weeks later. However, the other three players’ contracts will end in November.

Ruler renews contract

Ruler currently plays in a bot laner role on Gen.G in the League of Legends Champions Korea esports league. Before joining Gen.G, he played under organizations like Stardust, Samsung Galaxy, and KSV Esports. However, it can be said that he has played for the same organization continuously after leaving Stardust. This is because the same roster was rebranded multiple times.

While Ruler was with Samsung Galaxy, the team took first at 2016’s Korea Regional Finals. However, the team then lost to powerhouse SK Telecom T1 to end up in second at the 2016 World Championships. Ready to make up for previous mistakes and hungry for the trophy, the Samsung Galaxy team rebounded in the 2017 season. The roster only managed a 4th place finish in the 2017 LCK Summer Split, but they took first again in the LCK Regional Finals. The team then beat SK Telecom T1 in a 3 – 0 match to be crowned best League of Legends team.

Believing in Gen.G

KSV acquired the Samsung Galaxy roster and LCK slot after the 2017 World Championships. Since then KSV Esports has again rebranded into Gen.G. While under the Gen.G brand, Ruler has not been able to repeat the previous success. During the 2018 World Championships, the team was placed into Group B with teams like Cloud9, Royal Never Give Up, and Team Vitality. Gen.G ended up being knocked out in 13 – 16th place, after only getting one win and losing five games.

Gen.G Chief Operating Officer Arnold Hur stated “2020 is gonna be [Gen.G’s] year” in a tweet. Head of United States Operations Dominic Kallas also replied to the announcement saying he couldn’t wait to “update [his] closet” with a 2020 World Championship hoodie.
